Liverpool Labour Taking Action to Tackle the Housing Crisis and Support Local Families
Liverpool Labour is taking decisive action to tackle the housing crisis by bringing hundreds of long-empty homes back into use for families on the council housing waiting list.
After 14 years of Tory and Lib Dem austerity devastated local government finances, weakened communities, and created a national housing crisis, Liverpool Labour is working alongside the new Labour Government to rebuild our city and deliver the homes local families desperately need.
For too long, families across Liverpool have faced rising rents, a shortage of affordable housing, and growing waiting lists while empty and derelict homes were left untouched. Under the Conservatives, councils were stripped of funding, affordable housebuilding collapsed, and communities were left behind. Liverpool felt the impact of those decisions harder than most.
Now, with a Labour Government committed to fixing the foundations of the country and a Labour council determined to deliver locally, Liverpool is beginning to turn the page.
Through a major new Empty Homes Grant Scheme, Liverpool City Council will invest more than £7 million over the next three years to bring vacant properties back into use and help reduce the housing waiting list. The scheme is expected to transform hundreds of empty homes into safe, secure housing for local families.
Under the programme, owners of long-term empty properties will be able to access grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 to renovate homes that have stood empty for years. In return, those homes will help provide accommodation for families currently in need of stable housing.
This is about more than simply renovating buildings. Empty homes can blight communities, attract anti-social behaviour, and leave residents feeling ignored. Liverpool Labour believes every empty property represents an opportunity — an opportunity to support a family, strengthen a neighbourhood, and restore pride in our communities.
This investment forms part of Liverpool Labour’s wider plan to regenerate left-behind neighbourhoods and ensure no part of our city is forgotten. Alongside investment in parks, street cleansing, youth services, apprenticeships, and leisure facilities for young people, this housing programme demonstrates Labour’s commitment to rebuilding stronger communities after years of decline.
The new Labour Government has already made clear that housing and regeneration will be central priorities, with a commitment to delivering the biggest boost to affordable and social housing in a generation. Liverpool Labour welcomes that partnership and is determined to ensure our city benefits from the change that a Labour Government can deliver nationally.
While others oversaw decline and cuts, Labour is investing again — in homes, in communities, and in people. Liverpool Labour will always stand up for local residents and continue fighting to ensure everyone in our city has the dignity, security, and opportunity they deserve.
