In their manifesto, the Lib Dems promised that they would put an extra 3,000 police on Britain’s streets.

But since the election – and since getting into the bed with the Tories and supporting deep cuts to public services – the Lib Dems and the Tories have instead announced plans to cut tens of thousands of police officers.

And it is estimated that Merseyside Police will itself lose 800 police officers thanks to the cuts.

We are proud of the Labour Government’s record on police, and on fighting crime. Under Labour, there was investment in our police. Crime fell. We tackled anti-social behaviour and domestic violence. And with the introduction of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), we linked police into their communities.

These Lib Dem / Tory cuts will make the lives of the police harder, not easier, and the lives of criminals easier, not harder.

We’re campaigning for these cuts to stop. We need a well staffed, well trained police force in Liverpool. The Government’s cuts which are too deep, and too fast, threaten to make the lives of criminals easier, and the jobs of the police harder.

Before the last election, the Liberal Democrats promised to put an extra 3,000 police on the streets of Britain. Since the election, in coalition with the Conservatives, deep cuts have been announced that will hit our country’s police force.

Under the Government’s current plans, Merseyside Police are set to lose over 800 police officers. This amounts to a criminals charter. It will make the jobs of our police harder, not easier. It will make the lives of criminals much easier, and it will make them harder to catch.

We live in a country with record low levels of crime. That is thanks only to record levels of investment in our police force.

I am writing to you to ask you to keep the promises you made before the election, and to protect Britain’s police force.
